Help, I've just joined a company with a business casual dress code. Don't worry gents, we know how confusing this can be, so here are some basic rules to follow so you can't go wrong.
Some basic no-no's - not under any circumstances
Now we’ve got that out of the way, what on earth should you wear?
Firstly, despite the use of the word casual, you still want to be professional and smartly turned out; secondly you need your wardrobe to be practical and comfortable. So here are our suggestions.
Smart trousers that actually fit
Jeans and chinos that fit, you can go for colour but avoid high fashion colours unless you work in new media or tech
Made-to-measure shirts allow you to express your personality and look smart at the same time
Casual jackets to go with your trousers. These can be tweed, they can have fun linings but strictly no gold buttons
Cashmere or pure wool knitwear is fine with a pair of trousers (as long as you have a shirt under it)
The key message is to dress slightly more formally than others but to leave the pinstripes in the wardrobe and enjoy yourself - see this as an opportunity to express your personality.
